From the Sea / Mereltä

Raivio & Kulju projects ❤

Old leather jackets find a new function as a handmade unique carpet or blanket. This work interferes in the cycle of used material by utilising its charasteristics and qualities. The final product is taken out of original context but some subtle clues
remain. From the Sea-series has been exhibited in FennoFolk exhibition at the Design Museum in Helsinki (2008), DMY-Berlin (2011), Finnish Design Unwrapped exhibition both at London Design week (2012) and at Helsinki Design Museum (2012), A mini world design exhibition Everyday Discoveries as a part of the Design capital in 2012.

RAIVIO & KULJU is an art and design group, formed in 2006 when Päivi and Veera met while studying in the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Raivio & Kulju´s work has elements of both art and design and their work combines function, aesthetics and most importantly experimental approach to aspects such as making or manufacturing, use and function.

They design objects to stage situations and fantasies in which they use conjecture, even gallows humour, to question general conventions and familiar associations. They create tensions by stretching the boundaries of the practical and by boldly combining and reforming materials. They wander about in the familiar world of objects by shaping the mass into things one-off and unique, by working the durable to become fragile, and errors into ornament.
